McPHERSON The Hays Senior Legion Eagles opened the McPherson tournament with a pair of wins.
Hays (12-5) coasted to a 10-2 win against Wabaunsee on Friday and a 13-2 win Saturday against Emporia. Hays wrapped up pool play Saturday evening against Ark City.
The Eagles jumped out to a 7-0 lead over the first two innings, led by a four-run first.
A triple by Marcus Altman brought in Ryan Ruder and Ricky Hockett for a quick 2-0 lead. Cole Murphy drove in Altman and Jared Haynes with a single to cap the inning.
Altman went back to work with a sacrifice fly that scored Cole Schumacher in the second. Haynes double to left field brought around Hockett the following at-bat. Haynes was plated on a Jace Armstrong single for a 7-0 lead.
Wabaunsee got a pair of runs back in the fourth, though Hays responded with two in the fifth.
Ruder made his way around on a single by Schumacher, who scored the next at-bat.
Brett Hermann ended the game at 10-2 after scoring on a single by Ruder in the sixth.
Five Eagles finished with two hits.
Emporia snatched a quick 1-0 lead Saturday, though Hays struck for 10 runs to respond in the bottom of the first.
Altman smashed a two-run homer to give Hays a 3-0 lead. Hockett scored his TMP teammate, Ruder, with a two-run homer of his own to make it 10-1. Hays brought 14 batters to the plate in the inning.
Hays scored a single run in the second and two in the third before a lone Emporia run in the fourth.
Hockett led the way with three runs and three RBI on a pair of hits.
