PITTSBURG — By time the Pittsburg State hitters scuffed Fort Hays State University starting pitcher D.J. Carr, the Tigers (20-26, 14-21) had already scored enough runs to hold on for an 11-6 win in Game 2 Friday in Pittsburg.

Carr was perfect until PSU (14-30, 9-26 MIAA) first baseman Andrew Vogelbaugh earned a two-out walk. By that time, the Tigers led 7-0.

Connor Ross, Nick Hammeke and Austin Unrein all reached before the Tigers’ first out in the top of the first. Ross scored on a fielder’s choice from Alex Weiss, while Hammeke scored on a throwing error by the Gorilla catcher who attempted to throw out a stealing Weiss. Weiss scored the Tigers’ third run of the opening inning on a single by Joe Mapes.

Ty Redington opened the second with a walk and then stole second. He later scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-0 after two innings.

Mapes, Caleb Cherryholmes and Redington added RBI in the third for a seven-run advantage.

Carr allowed his first hit in the bottom of the sixth when the Tigers led 9-0 following RBI doubles from Ross and Unrein in the top of the frame.

Carr worked around the two-out single and continued the shutout until the eighth. The Gorillas used four singles to plate three runs to make it 9-3 to start the ninth.

Weiss added his second RBI of the game in the ninth, while Casey Sedbrook drew a bases-loaded walk for the Tigers’ 11th run.

FHSU reliever Connor Boyer allowed a two-run double in the Gorillas’ final at-bat, and Giles Fox came on to end the game with a pair of pop outs without allowing PSU to ever bring the potential trying run to the plate.

The Gorillas out-hit the Tigers 9-7 but committed four errors to FHSU’s three.

Weiss and Mapes each recorded two RBI in the game, while Carr picked up his fourth win of the season. The senior starter allowed three runs — two earned — with three strikeouts in eight innings of work.

In comparison, the Gorillas used seven different pitchers on the day.

The series finale scheduled for Saturday was canceled due to unplayable field conditions and will not be rescheduled.
