Hays High School’s boys swimming team started the new year at Salina South at Topeka West meets.

The Indians placed fifth in the five-team event in Salina on Jan. 7.

Freshman Chris Fuentes finished with the Indians best individual performance, placing fourth in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:18.23. Wichita Height’s Noah Childs won the event in 2:08.33.

Fuentes also handled the third leg on the Indians’ fourth-place team in the 400-yard relay. Hunter Perryman, Scott Ring, Fuentes and Tanner Callis finished in 4:20.63. Wichita Heights won the event in 3:38.42.

Wichita Heights edged out Salina South 472-468 for first place in the meet. Hays High finished with 145 points.

The Indians returned to action Tuesday at Topeka West and again struggled against a strong 13-team field. The Indians finished at the bottom with 14 points.

Topeka Seaman ran away with the meet title, totaling 432 points. Blue Valley Southwest took second at 327.

Ben Morley led the Indians in the individual events, taking 15th place in two events. He finished the 100 butterfly in 1:09.64 and the 100 backstroke in 1:15.8.

Hays High’s top relay performance came in the 200 freestyle relay. Hunter Perryman, Brett Bowles, Scott Ring and Chris Fuentes completed the race in 1:50.28.

The Indians host the Hays Invite at the Hays Center for Health Improvement on Jan. 19.
