Hays High worked a split over the weekend, taking down Kapaun Mt. Carmel in a 14-13 thriller, bouncing back from a 7-17 loss to Andover Central. Riley Dreher worked her way to the No. 2 spot in batting average, going 2-for-2 with a home run against the Jaguars and 3-for-4 with a home run against the Crusaders.
She notched four RBIs to jump into fifth place for season RBIs amongst the Western Athletic Conference. She sits in third with 40 hits on the season. On the mound, she recorded her eighth win of the season, going 5.2 innings against KMC. The Indians matched up with Garden City Tuesday afternoon to determine the No. 2 spot in the WAC.
Garden City added a pair of wins to their record, now 16-5 on the season led by their ace Kyleigh Whitehurst. Against Andover, Whitehurst issued eight strikeouts and allowed six runs (two earned) on seven hits for the win. Against Andover Central, she earned win No. 16 allowing nine runs (five earned) on ten hits, striking out eight and walking four. Whitehurst has maintained a top two spot for ERA throughout this season, currently No. 2 (3.86). She has reigned at the top of the WAC standings with 155 strikeouts and 16 wins.
At the plate, Piper Harris went 2-for-5 with six RBIs to lead the Buffs. Against the Jaguars, Harris went 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
WAC leaders in ERA, wins and batting average, the Great Bend Panthers logged a 10-0 win over Junction City. WAC leader Kya Behr went 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs, Camdyn Post a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBIs. On the mound, conference ERA leader Chayla Prendergast went six innings, allowing just two hits, issuing three walks and eight strikeouts for her 13th win of the season.
They stumbled in the weekend finale against Newton, falling 8-13. They conclude with a double header at home, hoping to gain an advantage over the Railers in their final two outings of the season.
Liberal has taken the weekend off after dropping all three contests to Hays last Tuesday and Thursday. They traveled to Dodge City Tuesday afternoon to take on the Lady Demons. They host Dodge Thursday afternoon in their regular season finale. The Lady Demons also had the weekend off.
