HAYS – Laverne W. Schumacher, age 83, of Hays, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, December 7, 2021, at Hays Medical Center, Hays. He was born February 28, 1938, to Wendelin and Anna (Schmidt) Schumacher in Pfeifer, Kansas. Laverne graduated from Saint Joseph Military Academy in 1956 and later served in the Army National Guard. He married Janie B. Urban on May 9, 1959, in Loretto, Kansas.
Laverne wore many hats in his lifetime.
He worked at the Hays Flour Mill and served 19 years as a City of Hays Police Officer. After his law enforcement career, he started L&J Schumacher Construction. The business helped to develop many areas in the Hays community. Laverne was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Hays. He enjoyed Tuesday night Poker Club, and hunting and fishing with his brothers, sons, and grandchildren. Of all the hats Laverne wore in his lifetime, the hat he loved to wear most
Of all the hats Laverne wore in his lifetime, the hat he loved to wear most of all was a baseball cap. Laverne was an avid baseball player and developed a love for the game at an early age that he kept throughout his lifetime. He was a co-founder and President of the Hays Baseball Association and helped with the development of the Jayhawk Conference. He coached the Hays Larks in the 1960s and early 1970s. Some of his proudest coaching positions were in the dugout of his grandchildren’s youth teams. Once they grew up, he could be found sitting in a lawn chair along the third-base line cheering and supporting all his grandchildren. It was his favorite pastime. Laverne is survived by his wife, Janie, Hays; sons Brian (Jane) Schumacher, Hays; Bruce (Brenda) Schumacher, Lawrence, KS; daughter Eileen Schumacher, Hays; brothers Dennis (Kathy) Schumacher and Wendelin Jr. (Carol) Schumacher, both of Hays; eight grandchildren, Dustin (Becky) Schumacher, Derek (Vanessa) Schumacher, Jenna Jacobs (Dylan Cobb), Wade Schumacher (Ashley Wunder), Dylan Schumacher (Danielle Lickteig), Katelyn Schumacher (Peter Maier), Cole Schumacher, and Wyatt Schumacher; nine great grand-children including Jaci, Louden, Sutton, Adrianna, Kendry, Vincent, Dalton, Brynn, and Blair.
He was preceded in death by his parents, son Steven Schumacher, brothers Vearl and Arlyn, and sister Twila Knight.
Funeral services will be 11:30 AM Saturday, December 11, 2021 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Hays. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays.
Visitation will be Friday 5 PM – 8 PM and Saturday 10:30 AM – 11:00 AM at Brock’s-Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory 2509 Vine Hays, Kansas 67601.
A combined parish vigil and rosary service will be 7 PM Friday at the funeral chapel.
