The Hays buffalo herd on Saturday welcomed another calf.

The calf, which has not yet been named, appears “happy and healthy,” said Jeff Boyle, parks director for the city of Hays.

It is actually the third calf born to the herd this summer; one didn’t make it, Boyle said. It is suspected one of the cows might have accidentally rolled onto the calf and caused injury.

The herd’s last calf of the season is expected to be born “any day now,” he said.

The city has seen an increase in visitors seeking a glimpse of the herd, especially since the arrival of a rare white bison in early June.
