NORTON — An early morning hostage situation ended with the suspect giving himself up to authorities.

Norton Police Chief Gerry Collumber said his department received a call of a domestic situation that turned into a hostage situation in the 100 block of Howard Avenue early this morning. The department requested assistance from the Norton County Sheriff’s Office and the Kansas Highway Patrol.

“We had a child still inside the residence, and the suspect was still inside the residence armed with a weapon,” according to reports, he said.

Power temporarily was cut to the area, a standard response to a hostage situation, Collumber said.

The suspect surrendered to the KHP search-and-rescue team around 7:30 a.m. without incident and was booked into the Norton County Jail.

There were no injuries.
