Mother Nature denied the Thomas More Prep-Marian and Garden City girls soccer teams a conclusion to what was shaping up to be an exciting finish on Thursday at Bickle-Schmidt Sports Complex.
The teams were forced to settle for a 1-1 tie with 12 minutes left in regulation after rain and lightning moved into the area.
TMP coach Darryl Wellbrock said he thought the Monarchs were on the verge of finding another goal before the game was halted.
“We were moving the ball really well there at the end with the three girls up top, just couldn’t get through,” he said. “If they would have continued that, I think we would have got it, but that’s the way it goes. Mother Nature took care of business."
TMP senior standout Kayla Vitztum got away from the Buffaloes four minutes into the game, scoring on a breakaway.
The Monarchs (TMP 9-4-1) had a few more quality opportunities but couldn’t find the back of the net.
“Aubrey (Koenigsman) had a really nice shot,” Wellbrock said. “She didn’t know where the keeper was and it just went right to the keeper.”
Garden City (9-3-3) knotted the game in the 29th minute when Haily Enriquez got a foot on a loose ball off a corner kick.
Outside of giving up the goal, Wellbrock said the Monarchs turned in a great defensive outing.
“Awesome,” he said. “They did a very good job.”
Allison Applequist played the entire game in goal for TMP, which will close out the regular season with two games next week. The Monarchs will play on the road at Wichita Word of Life on Monday before playing host to Wichita Classical on Thursday.
