Hays High School received five awards Sunday for its production this year of “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” in Wichita, capping a successful year for Hays High music and the final one for director Johnny Matlock.

Matlock, choral director at Hays High, is retiring after 20 years.

“This has been a great banner year, not just with music theater but my choirs as well. It’s been a really memorable one,” he said Wednesday.

The production was nominated in 11 categories of Music Theatre Wichita’s Jester Awards, presented at Century II Performing Arts Center’s Convention Hall.

Hays High received recognition in the following categories at Sunday’s awards:

• Leading actress, Erin Muirhead

• Ensemble/chorus

• Vocal music direction, Johnny Matlock

• Artistic guest, Jennie Rajewski, director

• Design guest, Rajewski and Jeremy Wann, scenic design

Matlock said he took a bus of about 44 students from the cast to the awards show. Muirhead and Ryan Will, as the leading actors, performed during the show, as did the other nominees in those categories.

“It’s really good for them to see the other shows. They get to learn a lot,” Matlock said.

Hays High was nominated for a total of 11 categories.

“It’s a neat culmination and a neat celebration of music theater. That’s why I like for my kids to be involved down there. It encourages them, affirms them, and supports music theater in our community,” Matlock said.
