BUHLER — Errors plagued the Hays High softball team in Tuesday's Class 4A Division I regional final against Abilene, costing the Indians a chance at a state berth.

Hays gave up eight runs in the fifth inning after committing five errors in the frame. The Indians couldn't recover, taking a 12-6 loss to end the season at 11-11.

Things started promisingly for Hays, with the Indians putting up three runs in the first inning. But Abilene (8-14) answered with four runs in the top of the second before later busting the game open with the eight-run fifth.

Kaitlin Brown had three hits for Hays while Jaysa Wichers had two.

The Indians were in danger of losing to winless Buhler in the regional opener earlier in the day but rallied from an 7-1 deficit. Hays put up seven runs in the third to grab an 8-7 lead and remained in control.

Macee Altman had two doubles for the Indians.

Abilene will move on to the 4A D-I tournament May 24-25 in Emporia.
