COLBY — The Hays Sr. Monarchs Legion baseball team is headed to the Class AA State Tournament.
The Monarchs advanced out of the Zone play with a 12-7 win over Hoisington on Thursday at Colby. They will play in the state tournament July 25-29 in Sabetha.
Hays, which went 2-0 in the Zone Tournament, scored four runs in the bottom of the second but Colby answered with four in the top of the third. The Monarchs regained the lead in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single from Chase Werth.
Hays (15-4-1) then broke it open with four runs in the fourth.
"As a team we did a good job of attacking fastballs in the zone early and finally felt like we had solid contact from everyone in the lineup one through nine," Monarch coach Ryan Post said. "We did things defensively I haven’t seen all season and rolled two clutch double plays in the later innings to keep Hoisington at bay."
Werth led the Monarchs with three hits and four runs driven in. He also earned the win on the mound, going five innings while allowing five runs and seven hits with four walks and six strikeouts. Trent Mayo tossed two innings to close it out.
"Chase and Trent did a great job at working through situations with runners on," Post said. "Credit to Hoisington, they hit the ball well on us, but we just did enough as a team to keep them from completing their comeback."
