CENTENNIAL, Colo. — A man awaiting trial in a 19-year-old murder of a former Hays attorney died in custody.

A Tuesday press release from the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s office said Robert Williams, 70, died Aug. 18. He was suffering from a chronic illness when he was arrested a year ago and received end-of-life care in the week before he died, the release said.

Rebecca Bartee, 41, had just moved to Centennial, Colo., several weeks before she was found dead June 7, 1999, submerged in her apartment bathtub after she didn’t show up for work at the Arapahoe County District Attorney’s Office.

She had moved from Hays, where she had worked as a child support enforcement attorney for the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services.

The investigation was re-opened last year after a Denver television news reporter received information from a man who said he information Bartee’s death was a murder. The reporter connected the man with sheriff’s investigators.

Williams and Bartee lived in the same apartment building at the time of her death, and Williams was still living there when he was arrested.

The sheriff’s press release said no other suspects are sought in Bartee’s death, and the case is now closed.
