HESSTON — In a unique cross country race, the Hays High School cross country team got a pair of top five finishes from its freshman class Thursday at the Swather Special.

The meet was run by class with freshman girls, followed by freshman boys and so on.

The meet then scored the top five team runners, regardless of class. The race also was run on the cart paths on the course due to the recent rains.

On the girls’ side, five runners received class medals for the Indians. Landri Dotts was the highest finisher in her class, finishing sixth place in the freshman race in 21 minutes, 36 seconds. She also was the Indians’ top runner for the day. Yesenia Maldonado finished ninth in the junior race in 22:05. Claire Shippy ran a 22:18 to finish seventh in the sophomore race, while Cristin Leos was ninth and Allison Shubert 16th as sophomores.

The Indian boys got medals from three runners. Johnny Fuller paced the Indians, finishing 14th in the senior class race. Fuller’s 18:21 was the top Indian time. Brayden Hines was fourth in the freshman race with a 19:05, while Chris Isbell was 19th in the freshman race with a 20:14.
