The Thomas More Prep-Marian/Ellis soccer team will look to keep the best postseason run in program history going when the Monarchs take on Bishop Miege in the Class 4-1A semifinals at 7 p.m. Friday at Piper High School in Kansas City, Kansas.
Thriving in front of a big crowd at the FHSU Soccer Stadium, the Monarchs (9-7) advanced to the semifinals with a 1-0 victory over Hayden on Tuesday behind Logan Shaw's goal early in the second half.
"This is the first time in program history (to make it to the semis)," TMP coach Shea Koerner said. "Obviously [coach Darryl Wellbrock] and the girls have done it a few times, but this is the first time for the boys, so we're excited."
Koerner hopes making the semis can continue to add to the development of high school soccer in the area.
"Our numbers we're a little down this year and something like this really kind of shows the community how big soccer can be," Koerner said. "Yeah, we can pack the stands for Friday night for football, but we can also pack the stands for a soccer game, too."
Bishop Miege enters the match with a 15-5-2 record after advancing with a 4-0 win over Heritage Christian. Friday's 5 p.m semifinal features Buhler (15-2-2) vs. Kansas City Christian (10-7-2). The championship match will also be played at Piper at 2 p.m. on Saturday while the third-place match will be held at noon.
"There are two teams that I've had circled all year that I really wanted to see," Koerner said. "Buhler is one. We played them last year and beat them 3-2 on our homecoming game and then they cut us from their schedule this year. The other one that I've had circled that we played the past two years and also cut us from their schedule is Bishop Miege. I want both of them."
Koerner said he will feel good about his team's chances if they can carry over the performance from Tuesday's win against Hayden.
"The focus was great," he said. "The finishing could be a little bit better, but the touches were good, the passes were good. Now we just got to go be ready to win two more."
