A man originally charged with assault, battery and multiple counts of exploitation of a child entered a plea deal that could place him on probation for three and a half years.

In the plea agreement, Nicholas Kruse entered an Alford plea to one charge of aggravated assault and reckless aggravated battery.

Recommended sentencing is a total of 42 months probation with an underlying sentence of 40 months in prison for both cases.

Sentencing will be Feb. 11 at 9 a.m. He was to be released on an own recognizance bond under Northwest Kansas Community Corrections.

Kruse was arrested Sept. 12 after a woman reported to Hays Police her boyfriend of four months was abusing her. She reported he had grabbed a pocket knife and told her he would kill her.

He was also originally charged with 10 counts of sexual exploitation of a child for possessing sexual images of his girlfriend, who was 17 at the time. Defense attorney Cassy Ziegler had said in a prior hearing the woman had told Kruse she was 18.
