BOLIVAR, Mo. — The Fort Hays State men’s basketball team broke out of its recent road funk in a big way, picking up a 73-58 victory on Saturday at Southwest Baptist.
The Tigers had a nine-point advantage at halftime and led by as much as 24 in the second half, picking up their first road win of the season.
FHSU (9-4 overall, 3-1 MIAA) shot 50 percent from the field and knocked down 11 of 23 attempts from behind the arc.
Senior forward Brady Werth led the Tigers with 17 points and pulled down 13 rebounds. Marcus Cooper chipped in 10 points while Aaron Nicholson, Trey O’Neil and Devin Davis had nine each.
Fort Hays closed the first half on a 10-2 run to take a 36-27 lead into the break. The Tigers then opened the second half on a 15-5 run capped off by a Werth jumper.
FHSU later grabbed its biggest lead (67-44) with 5:45 left on another bucket from Werth, who went 7 of 15 from the field.
Damien Prgomet scored a game-high 24 points for the Bearcats on 10-of-13 shooting. SBU finished 19 of 54 from the field for 42 percent.
The Tigers will be at home to face Northeastern State at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday in Gross Memorial Coliseum. Chris Russow added 10 points for the Bearcats, who fell to 8-5 overall and 2-2 in the MIAA.
