LIBERAL — Senior guard Trae McCrae scored a game-high 22 points to help the Hays High boys basketball notch a 68-56 road win over Liberal on Friday in the Indians’ Western Athletic Conference opener.

The Indians trailed 13-8 at the end of the first quarter but outscored Liberal 39-22 over the next two quarters to take a 47-35 lead into the fourth.

Cade Swayne scored nine of his 13 points in the fourth to help the Indians move to 4-2 and 1-0 in WAC play. Dalyn Schwarz added 11 points for Hays High. 

Braxton Hyde and Jordan Mendoza each scored 14 points for the Redskins, who dropped to 5-2 and 0-1 in WAC play. 

The Indians will play at Great Bend on Tuesday. 

Hays High girls fall

The Hays High girls dropped their conference opener, falling to Liberal 61-42. 

The Indians fell to 3-3 on the season while Liberal moved to 7-0.
