A man and a woman from Norcatur have been arrested in connection with the accidental discharge of a gun Wednesday evening at Walmart, 4301 Vine St.

No one was injured in the incident, which was called in by several people to Hays police dispatch at 6:48 p.m. after shoppers heard a gunshot in the store.

The two suspects detained after Hays police arrived at Walmart are Linda J. Lipe, 45, and Phillip L. Lipe, 58, both from Norcatur.

The two were arrested on suspicion of criminal use of a weapon, endangerment, unlawful discharge of a firearm within city limits, interference with a law enforcement officer, possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

They were booked into the Ellis County Jail and are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, said a news release from the Hays Police Department.

“The investigation has determined there was only one bullet discharged from a pistol owned by the Lipes, and that the gun went off after it was accidentally dropped on the floor,” said the release. “The discharged bullet did not injure anyone.”

Officers responded to Walmart for an active shooter situation and as they arrived shoppers were running out of the store. The store was closed while law enforcement searched the scene and secured the building.

“Eye-witnesses identified two suspects as being involved in the shooting incident,” the release said. “Officers quickly apprehended the suspects without incident.”

Law enforcement officers from the Hays Police Department, Ellis County Sheriff’s Office, Fort Hays State University Police Department, the Kansas Highway Patrol, and the Kansas Bureau of Investigations responded to the situation.
