A first-degree murder charge was filed Tuesday in Ellis County District Court in the death of a 26-year-old man in February.

Ellis County Attorney Tom Drees said Ryan P. Thompson, 34, Ellis, made a first appearance in court Tuesday afternoon on that charge, along with charges of possession of almost 24 grams of methamphetamine with intent to distribute and criminal possession of a firearm by a felon.

An arrest warrant was issued and executed for Thompson on March 14. Bond has been set at $750,000. Thompson is in custody in the Ellis County Jail.

A preliminary hearing is yet to be scheduled. Colby attorney Justin Barrett has appointed as Thompson's attorney.

Thompson is charged with the premeditated and intentional murder of Diego Gallaway on Feb. 27. The criminal complaint filed against Thompson alleges he was holding Gallaway in chokehold when he shot him in the head with a .22-caliber handgun.

If convicted of the murder charge, special sentencing rules will apply, as Thompson has a prior felony conviction of aggravated endangerment of a child from October in Russell County. The special sentencing rules would mean a mandatory 50-year sentence, Drees said.
