COLBY — The Hays High baseball team opened the season with a doubleheader sweep on Monday at Colby, winning 4-0 and 9-1.
Trey Riggs pitched a gem in the first game, striking out 16 and allowing just one hit in the shutout.
Dominic Bainter had two of the Indians’ four hits in the first game and Riggs had an RBI double.
In the nightcap, Hays scored two runs in the second inning and three more in the third to open up a 5-0 lead. Cody Petersen and Dylan Dreiling each had two hits for the Indians. Brock Lummus and Dreiling each drove in three runs.
Lummus and Dreiling both doubled in the second game while Riggs had a triple.
Hays starting pitcher Palmer Hutchison didn't allow a hit in 3.2 innings, earning the win. He gave up one run while striking out four. Bainter tossed the last 2.1 innings, with Hays winning by run rule after six innings.
The Indians will play host to Russell in a doubleheader at 4 p.m. Thursday at HHS Field.
