The Thomas More Prep-Marian boys golf team made program history on Monday at Smoky Hill Country Club, winning its home meet for the first time in the 12-year history of the TMP Invitational.

Three top-10 finishes helped carry the Monarchs to the team title by eight strokes over Goodland.

The Monarchs compiled a team score of 352, led by Cameron Rozean’s second-place 82. Goodland’s Ryan Lalicker won with an 80.

TMP coach Bryan VonFeldt said he was proud to see his team break through and win the tournament after coming close a few times in the past.

“We’ve even played well here at times and just run into some teams that have played a little better than us,” VonFeldt. “It was really nice to see some guys play well that have been right there all season long. In kind of tough conditions today, they put together a decent round. It’s awfully nice to come away with a win.”

VonFeldt said he thought heading into the tournament that the Monarchs would have a good shot to win with a good showing.

“All year long, I’ve known if we could play up to our potential, we should be in every tournament, or at least have a chance,” VonFeldt said. “Today with the weather being cold and windy it was kind of a wild card. To see some of the guys come through with some of their better scores of the year was impressive.”

Rozean, who also took second in the TMP Invitational a year ago, is in the midst of a strong senior season for the Monarchs. Rozean won the Russell Invitational with a 75 last Thursday.

“Cameron’s always kind of been our leader and he played well again today,” VonFeldt said. “I know he would’ve liked to come away with the win, too, individually, but I think it’s kind of helped push some of other guys knowing that he’s playing well. If we could just get a few other guys to throw up a few more scores in the 80s, we’ll be right there competing at the end of the year.”

TMP’s Ryan Stoecklein tied for third place with an 85 while Ethan Brummer took ninth for the Monarchs by carding an 88.

“Ryan Stoecklein played really well today,” VonFeldt said. “He shot an 85 today and Ethan Brummer shot an 88 — I think both of those are personal bests, and to do it out here today at our home tournament in tough conditions, is really, really good.”

Jack Johnson fired a 97 for TMP while Tyler Robben shot a 99.

VonFeldt said the Monarchs have the potential to finish the season strong.

”I expect us to be there at the end of year competing for some hardware at state,” VonFeldt said.

Plainville took third as a team with a 371. Goodland's Garin Ihrig tied for third individually with Stoecklein at 85, while Plainville's Parker Krob, Trego's Dalton Mai and Ellis' Brady Frickey all tied for fifth at 86.
