The Hays Police Department recorded an unusually high number of arrests over the weekend for driving under the influence.
HPD Chief Don Scheibler told The Hays Daily News officers made 10 arrests — five on Friday and five on Saturday.
“That’s just unacceptable in this day and age. There’s been so much education going on it’s just unacceptable,” he said.
That number is unusually high on a weekend that did not include events such as Oktoberfest or graduations or when the department was not conducting saturation patrols, he said.
“There wasn’t any extra enforcement. It was forecast to be a normal weekend in Hays,” Scheibler said.
"Officers were proactive and are going to continue to be," he said, adding he applauded his officers for their work.
Scheibler also said he wanted to remind those who drive on the weekends without drinking should drive defensively and wear their seatbelts.
Hays has several options available for those who have been drinking to avoid driving. In addition to designating a sober driver, the Access Van from Developmental Services of Northwest Kansas offers Safe Ride for free from 9:30 p.m. to 3 a.m. Wednesday through Saturday by calling 785-621-2580. Services including Uber, Lyft and taxis are also available in town.
