ELLIS — One person died in a house fire late Saturday afternoon in Ellis.

Authorities had not verified the identity of the victim early in the evening and were awaiting the arrival of the state fire marshal, Ellis Police Chief Taft Yates told The Hays Daily News.

“The primary renter of the house is not home, and we have been in contact with the primary renter,” Yates said. The Ellis County coroner was on the scene.

The fire, in the 300 block of Monroe, was reported by a citizen at 3:51 p.m. An Ellis County Fire truck arrived on scene within minutes, followed by Ellis Police and the Ellis Fire Department.

“When we arrived on scene at 3:53 and 3:55, smoke was billowing out of the south end of the house,” Yates said, adding flames were also coming out of an open window.

The fire was contained to the house. The investigation is ongoing.
