Martina Marie Holmes, 95, died Sunday, Aug. 25, 2019, at the Ness County Hospital.

She was born on May 17, 1924, to Wendelen A. and Margaret (Herrman) Rohr. She was a 1942 graduate of Ness City High School and a 1945 graduate of St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing in Wichita.

She married Joseph Munsch on Sept. 10, 1945. He preceded her in death Jan. 1, 1958. She later married Melvin Max Holmes in February 1960. He preceded her in death Sept. 25, 1970. During her second year at St. Francis, she was a U.S. Nurses Cadet Corp and served until World War II ended in 1945. The family moved to La Crosse for a short time where she worked for Dr. Baker at the Baker Hospital. After returning to Ness City, she was busy with her family responsibilities until in 1954, she helped open the doors to Ness County Hospital and continued on as a registered nurse for 32 years.

She was a active Girl Scout Leader for many years. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Church where she served on the Altar Society and was a Christian Mother. She also served as the school nurse for Sacred Heart School. She was active with the American Legion Auxiliary serving as the first Chairman of the 8th District. Also for many summers, she was one of two nurses working at the American Legion Auxiliary’s Girl’s State program held at the University of Kansas.

Survivors include two sons, Stan Munsch and wife, Bernus, Hays, and Kenneth Munsch and wife, Darleen, Loveland, Colo.; two daughters, Kathy McCammond, Ness City, and Terri Dann and husband, Mike, Lawrence; two brothers, Levane Rohr, Larned, and Alvin Rohr, Cunningham; two sisters, Ida Belle Gassman, Dighton, and Vera Mae Schmidt, Larned; 13 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Lisa Ann Holmes on July 17, 1975; her parents; and a sister, Esther Herrman.

Services were Aug. 29 at Sacred Heart Church, Ness City; burial in the Sacred Heart Cemetery.
