It could be a stormy Memorial Day weekend for Leavenworth County residents.
Chuck Magaha, director of Leavenworth County Emergency Management, said there is a chance for severe storms today. And the chance for thunderstorms will continue during the weekend.
There could be an initial round of storms this morning. Storms later in the day could produce large hail, strong winds and heavy rain, Magaha said.
As of Thursday afternoon, the risk for a tornado during today’s storms was considered to be low, according to the National Weather Service.
According to a NWS forecast for Leavenworth, there also will be a chance for showers and thunderstorms Saturday night.
There will be stronger chances for showers and thunderstorms Sunday and Monday, according to the forecast.
Magaha said the storms in the forecast could produce between one and 1.5 inches of rain. He said this could “aggravate” Stranger Creek. The creek, which flows from the north end of the county to the south end, is prone to flooding, particularly in the Easton area.
“We’ll be monitoring it for sure,” Magaha said.
