Nikki E. Hemel, 70, Dighton, died Friday, Dec. 15, 2017, at his home.

He was born Sept. 19, 1947, in Dighton to Edwin S. and Emily Jean (Rowe) Hemel. He was a 1965 graduate of Dighton High School and earned his auto body certification from Goodland Area Vo-Tech.

He married Mary Wempe on March 1,1969, in Hutchinson. He later married Beverly Kerkhoff on July 20, 1999, in Lane County. He was a truck driver and parts man at Bretz Inc. He served as a military policeman in the U.S. Army from 1968 to 1970.

Survivors include his wife, of the home; two sons, Adair Hemel, Ness City, and Kegan Hemel, Atwood; two stepdaughters, Rhonda Bainter, Grainfield, and Laurel Burbrink, Halstead; a brother, Rikki Hemel, Van Alstyne, Texas; two sisters, Alana Chapman and Alicia Pike, both of Dighton; 17 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Theresa Catholic Church, Dighton; burial in Healy Cemetery, with military honors by American Legion Post No. 190 and Kansas Army National Guard Honor Guard.

Calling hours will be from noon to 5:30 p.m. Monday at Boomhower Funeral Home, Dighton.

A rosary will be at 7 p.m. Monday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to St. Theresa Catholic Church, St. Catherine Hospice, American Legion Post No. 190 or American Cancer Society in care of the funeral home.
