Josephine Hale, 86, formerly of Topeka, died Thursday, June 28, 2018, at Good Samaritan Society in Hays.
She was born June 11, 1932, in Covington, Tenn., to Elbert Lee Roper Jr. and Mary Frances (Hunt) Roper.
She moved to Oklahoma City, attended Lincoln Grade School for a couple of months and later Edgemere Grade School. She attended junior high at Harding and graduated high school at Classen. After high school, she enrolled in junior college at Mount Vernon in Washington D.C. In 1955, she graduated from Oklahoma University with a bachelor’s in fine arts painting. While at OU, she was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority.
She married Donald Ray Hale on Dec. 5, 1955, in Oklahoma City. He preceded her in death Jan. 16, 2009. She was an antiques dealer for much of her life.
She enjoyed early American antiques, watching old movies and spending time with her family.
Survivors include a daughter, Elizabeth “Betsy” Lynn Clark and husband, Edwin “Ed”, Hays; a brother, John Parrish III; two sisters, Mary Lee Hurst and Laura Midgely; eight grandchildren, Jeremy Clark, Hays, Brandon Clark, Greer, S.C., Amber Hale, Topeka, Ashley Feurborn, Carbondale, Tyler Hale, Chesapeake, Va., Bobbi Hase and Miles Dean, both of Olathe, and Randee Wisdom, Hiawatha; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Scott Hale; a daughter, Alison Hale; and a grandson, Joshua Wells.
A memorial visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Brock’s-Keithley Funeral Chapel & Crematory, 2509 Vine, Hays KS 67601; inurnment will be at a later date in Topeka.
