Roy F. Brungardt, 73, Hays, died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2018, at his home.

He was born Dec. 31, 1944, in Bogue to Herbert and Barbara (Brown) Brungardt. He was a 1962 graduate of Hill City High School and a 1966 graduate of Fort Hays State University with a degree in accounting.

He married Karen Wilhelm on June 25, 1966, in Russell. They spent time in the early years living in Kansas City, Russell and Wichita, before moving back to Hays in 1980. He was working as a certified public accountant in these cities with companies such as Arthur Anderson Consulting, Elmer Fox & Co, and Grant Thornton. He  and four other partners started Brungardt, Hower, Ward, Elliot and Pfeifer in 1986, a professional accounting firm. He enjoyed working with all his fellow co-workers and clients. If anyone knew him well, they might even say that accounting and tax returns was his one and only true hobby, as he worked in this industry for 52 years.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, The Hays Rotary Club, served on the Hays Chamber of Commerce Board, and was big help in starting the Heart of America Business Development, an organization that was created to bring or start new business to Hays. He was a huge supporter of Thomas More Prep-Marian High School and FHSU. He was a big believer in faith, family and his co-workers and clients

He enjoyed to travel and golf.

Survivors include his wife, Hays; two sons, Jeff Brungardt and wife, Suzanne, Kansas City, Kan., and Kirk Brungardt, Dallas; four sisters, Carol Honas, Lisa McCarty and Debbie McMaster, all of Denver, and Lavonne Junemann, Norton; a granddaughter, Katelyn Brungardt, Chicago; and a grandson, John Brungardt, Kansas City.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays; burial in St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 to 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, both at Brock’s-Keithley Funeral Chapel, 2509 Vine, Hays, KS 67601.

A combined rosary/vigil will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral chapel.

Memorials are suggested to TMP or Hays Med Hospice Center in care of the funeral chapel.
