Leo Michael Berens, 99, Colby, died Wednesday, March 6, 2019.

He was born April 6, 1919, in Ellis County to John and Anna (Kuhn) Berens. After leaving the home he joined the Civilian Conservatory Corps. 

He married Elizabeth Krannawitter on Nov. 22, 1942, in Park. She preceded him in death, He worked for Dougherty Auto Electric for 47 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving from 1942 to 1943 during World War II.

He was a member of the American Legion for 76 years. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.

He enjoyed fishing, golf, playing town team baseball. He coached and umpired K-18 and American Legion baseball for many years.

Survivors include a son, Timothy Berens and wife, Leah, Olathe; a daughter, Nancy Carpenter and husband, Melvin, Overland Park; three grandchildren, Cary Carpenter, San Francisco, Casandra Carpenter, Bucyrus, and Benjamin Weintrub, Berlin, Germany; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, John Jay Berens; five brothers and three sisters.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Colby; inurnment in the church cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or Prairie Museum of Art and History in care of Baalmann Mortuary, Colby.
