Albert Edward Newton, 94, died Saturday, May 4, 2019, in Hutchinson.
He was born Jan. 27, 1925, near Dexter.
He married Barbara Ramsey in 1950 in Arkansas City. During World War II he served as a medic on a transport ship that carried troops across the Pacific into combat and brought home the wounded. He was an elementary school teacher and coach at Nashville, Shallow Water, Brookville, Cambridge, Carlton, White City and Benton, all located in Kansas. In 1969 after earning his master’s degree from Emporia University he became a grade school principal at Northern Valley School District. He later served as superintendent of Grinnell, El-Saline and Conway Springs school districts, where he retired in 1985.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Chris and wife, Janet, Hutchinson, Craig and wife, Kristy, Decatur, Texas and Clint and wife, Joann, Salina; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a great-great- grandson.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. May 25 in Hope Cemetery, Arkansas City. A reception will follow at Saint Paul Church in Arkansas City.
Memorials are suggested to Arkansas City Retired Teachers’ Scholarship Fund in care of Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson.
