Terry "Coach" Masterson, 79, Hutchinson, died Friday, July 5, 2019, at Ascension Via Christi Hospital-St. Francis, Wichita.

He was born Sept. 20, 1939, in Newton to Avy and Edna (Riesen) Masterson. He graduated from Halstead High School, Hutchinson Community College, Fort Hays State University and Utah State University with a master’s degree in sociology.

After college, he taught and coached at Inman, Halstead and Ellinwood high schools before learning that legendary track coach Nelson Sorem was retiring from HCC. He coached at HCC for 41 seasons, from 1968 to 2009. Before that, he played football and ran track for the HCC Blue Dragons. Track and cross country allowed for his induction into the HCC Quarterback Club Hall of Fame in 2001. In 2005, he was inducted into the National Junior College Athletic Association Cross Country Coaches Hall of Fame. The Terry Masterson Twilight Cross Country Invitational will be this year on Aug. 30.

He married Barbara J. Lichter on Aug. 1, 1959, in Olmitz. She preceded him in death Aug. 4, 1969. He later married Nancy Keens on June 4, 1971, in Hutchinson.

Survivors include his wife, Hutchinson; two sons, Brad Masterson and wife, Lashel, Elkhorn, Neb., and Cameron Masterson and wife, Rochelle, Hutchinson; two daughters, Kimberley Masterson and David Lyon, Hutchinson, and Jill McBee and husband, Brent, Olathe; seven grandchildren, Taylor and Kristin McBee, Mya Masterson, Brett Masterson, Jacqueline (Christian Murray) Masterson, Josh and McKinsey Mitten; and a great-granddaughter, Jazlyn Murray.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Elliott Mortuary Chapel, Hutchinson.

Friends can call from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. at the mortuary chapel. Family will receive friends at Trinity United Methodist Church, Hutchinson, immediately following the service.
