Matthew John Ernsting, 61, Larned, died Saturday, Nov. 9, 2019, after a short illness in Hays.
He was born April 13, 1958, in La Lima, Honduras to William and Marlene Ernsting. He was a 1977 graduate of Ellinwood High School.
He married Kathleen Payne in 1983. He was a longtime resident of Larned, working at the Larned State Hospital in patient care for more than 30 years. He served in the U.S. National Guard.
He attended The Fathers House faith community in Larned.
He was a people person, gregarious and warm. He was always quick with a quip, or if time allowed a story. He had a deep rumbling laugh that was unmistakable. He enjoyed holidays and Christmas time with his family.
Survivors include his mother, Ellinwood; his children, Levi Ernsting, Shelton, Wash., Rebeka Watson, Edinborough, Scotland; two brothers, Guy Ernsting, Ellinwood, and Andrew Ernsting, Overland Park; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. John Lutheran Church, Ellinwood.
