H. James “Jim” Brungardt, 81, Victoria, died Sunday, Nov. 24, 2019, at Hays Medical Center.
He was born Jan. 17, 1938, in Salina, to H. F. “Ham” and Regina F. (VonLintel) Brungardt. He was a 1955 graduate of Victoria High School, attended Rockhurst College in Kansas City and was a graduate of Fort Hays State College.
He married Gladys M. (Kippes) on April 10, 1961, in Victoria. He and his wife owned and operated Brungardt’s IGA grocery store in Victoria until they retired in the mid 1990’s. He remained very active and continued working as a courier for KPC Lab’s of Hays for 15 years. The Brungardt family started the hardware and grocery store in the late 1890’s and served the Victoria community for four generations. He served in the Kansas Air National Guard for three years.
He was a former member of the Butterfield Antique Car Club for a number of years. He was a member of the Basilica of St. Fidelis, the Victoria 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus and the 4th Degree Assembly Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; a son, Chris Brungardt and wife, Bertha, Victoria; a brother, William “Bill” Brungardt and wife, Marcie, Branson, Mo.; three grandchildren, James Brungardt and wife, Erin, Janae Tidwell and husband, Alex, and Janessa Schuetz and husband, Tommy, all of Hays; six great-grandchildren, Kendall, Trey, and Myla Brungardt, Makson and Shae Tidwell, and Lawson Schuetz.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Joyce Ann Brungardt.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at The Basilica of St. Fidelis, Victoria, with military honors by the Victoria Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1751. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at The Basilica of St. Fidelis, Victoria, and from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Saturday, at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary, 412 Main Victoria, KS 67671.
A vigil with the Daughters of Isabella and Knights of Columbus rosary will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Basilica. The 4th Degree Knights of Columbus will stand honor guard from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the Basilica of St. Fidelis in care of the mortuary.
