Benjamin J. Shaffer, 94, Ellinwood, died Thursday, Dec. 12, 2019, at Woodhaven Care Center, Ellinwood.
He was born Feb. 7, 1925, in Homewood to William Arthur and Hattie (Phinney) Shaffer.
He married Florence Louise Bahr on Nov. 26, 1952, in Olmitz. She preceded him in death May 7, 2016. He was a cementer for Allied Cementing until he retired and then was a groundskeeper at Barton Community College.
He was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose; Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion Post No. 152, both of Ness City, and KIOGA.
He enjoyed reading, auctions, garage sales and going to coffee with the Burger King gang and especially enjoyed spending time with his family.
Survivors include three sons, Kenneth Shaffer and wife, Donna, Great Bend, Tom Shaffer and wife, Sue, Wichita, and Dan Shaffer, St. John; six daughters, Linda Elliott and husband, Thomas, McPherson, Patsy Giangrosso and husband, Charli, Blue Springs, Mo., Treva Goodman and husband, Allen and Cathy Shaffer , all of Hays, Laurie Logan and husband, Buddy, Clay Center, and Sharon Denney and husband, Joe, Great Bend; 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren, with one on the way; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Shaffer, Ottawa; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Bill and Cal; and five sisters, Georgia, Lois, Helen, Florence and Sarah.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Great Bend; burial in St. Ann Catholic Cemetery, Olmitz.
Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Bryant Funeral Home, Great Bend.
A vigil will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to Quilts of Valor or Great Bend Senior Center in care of the funeral home.
