Alvin P “Dutch” Rohr, 92, El Dorado, died Friday, Dec. 13, 2019, in El Dorado.
He was born April 16, 1927, near Pfeifer to Peter P. and Mary (Klaus) Rohr.
He married Vera Pfannenstiel on Oct. 22, 1951, in Hays. She preceded him in death. He later married Cleo Copeland Welty on Jan. 28, 1978, in El Dorado. She preceded him in death. In the 1960s, he ran a small business from his home repairing small appliances. At the end of World War II and during his service he guarded SS men in Germany and also secured buildings in Berlin, looking for snipers.
He enjoyed tinkering in his garage, working in his yard and woodworking. He came from a generation where men could fix almost anything. His greatest joys in life were his religion, working and his family.
Survivors include four sons, Elmer Rohr and George Welty and wife, Adella, all of El Dorado, Donald Rohr and wife, Teresa, Osborne, and Richard Welty, Wichita; four daughters, Rose Ann Rohr, Lila Mercer and husband, Gerald, Judy Rohr-Smith and husband, James, all of El Dorado and Juliann Rowland and husband, Gerald, Augusta; 10 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and seven step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Julian Rohr; a stepdaughter, Irene Macy; five brothers, Robert Rohr, Fred Rohr, Nick Rohr, Victor Rohr and Cyril Rohr; a baby brother, Nicholas Rohr; and five sisters, Ottillia Rohr, Clementina Braun, Agnes Gross, Philomena Braun and Clarita Braun.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at The Basilica of St. Fidelis, Victoria; burial in St. Fidelis Cemetery, Victoria.
Friends can gather from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Carlson Colonial Funeral Home, El Dorado. A rosary will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Additional local visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Clines-Keithley Mortuary, 412 Main, Victoria, KS, 67671 and from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at The Basilica. A rosary will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the local mortuary.
Memorials are suggested to Veterans of Foreign Wars or Knights of Columbus.
