Joyce (Philip) Hurt Barr, 79, Emporia, died Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2019, at Emporia Presbyterian Manor.

She was born Oct. 28, 1940, in Hays to Ward Robert and Mildred Pauline (Lusebrink) Philip. She earned two bachelor degrees in 1962 and 1963 from Fort Hays State University. She later returned to school and earned a master’s degree in 1981 from Emporia State University.

She married David Hurt on June 1, 1963. She began her teaching career in Ness City on Feb. 1, 1963. She later married Bryan Barr on July 1, 2000, and retired the same day as a teacher at Village Elementary School in Emporia.

Survivors include her husband, of the home; a son, Dean Hurt and wife, Lori, Corvallis, Ore.; a daughter, Jana Grimm and husband, Col. John, San Diego; a stepson, Lee Barr and wife, Shelly, Canton, Texas; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Jan. 3, 2020, at First United Methodist Church, Emporia; cremation has taken place. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Jan. 4, 2020, in Mount Allen Cemetery, Hays.

Memorials are suggested to Mildred Lusebrink-Philip, Rose Lusebring-Summers and Joyce Philip-Barr Scholarship at Pittsburg State University in care of Charter Funerals.
