James Volney “Jim” Bottomly, 84, Hays, died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2020, at Good Samaritan Society of Ellis.

He was born April 9, 1935, in Lenora to Herbert J. and Jane Jean (Watson) Davis-Russ Bottomly. He attended grade school and high school in Lenora.

He married Mildred C. (Knoll) on July 25, 1955, in Hill City. He worked for the U.S. Post Office in Reno, Nevada, for 27 years and retired in 1990. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He moved to Hays in 1993.

He was a member of St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church, Hays.

Survivors include his wife, Ellis; a son, Herbert Bottomly and wife, Lella, Sparks, Nev.; a daughter, Barbara Beyer and husband, Robert, Reno, Nev.; three grandchildren, Chloe Bottomly, Caleb Bottomly, and James Beyer; and two step-grandchildren, Christine Beyer and B J Beyer.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Lester Davis and Millard “Dude” Russ; and three sisters, Una Davis, Stella Davis and Iris “Rusty” Montgomery.

Graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery, WaKeeney, with military honors by Hays V.F.W. Post No. 9076.

Memorials are suggested to Good Samaritan Society of Ellis.
