Kathleen Marie Evans, 68, Hays, died Tuesday, January 14, 2020 at Hays Medical Center.

She was born Aug. 29, 1951, in Hays to Henry and Loretta (Giebler) Stecklein. She was a 1969 graduate of Hays High School, attended Kansas University majoring in music and graduated from Fort Hays State University with a bachelor’s degree in music.

She married Charles “Chuck” Harold Evans, Jr. on July1, 1977. He preceded her in death in Nov. of 1984. She owned Kathy’s Piano Studio where she taught piano lessons, was a homemaker, and a sales associate at JCPenney, Kline’s Department Store and Stage.

She was a member of Sigma Alpha Iota, Alpha Pi (Fort Hays State University) chapter. She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, a perpetual adorer, an organist at Immaculate Heart of Mary and St. Nicholas of Myra churches, and choir director at St. Nicholas Church.

She enjoyed crafts, sewing, toll and ceramic painting, and playing piano. She enjoyed her family, was an awesome mom, and enjoyed her trips to New York to see her daughter.

Survivors include a daughter, Theresa Evans, Brooklyn, N.Y.; three brothers, Jerry Stecklein and wife, Joanne, Colleyville, Texas, Daniel Stecklein and wife, Gayle, Hays, and Duane Stecklein and wife, Mary, Munjor; a sister; Virginia Hertel, Arvada, Colo.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Mary Coy Kippes; and a brother-in-law, David Hertel.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Munjor; burial in St. Francis Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Friday, both at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine, Hays,KS 67601.

A vigil/rosary will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to American Diabetes Association or Lewy Body Dementia Association, in care of the funeral home.
