Phyllis Higgins, 85, died Friday, April 17, 2020, at Homestead Memory Care Facility, Olathe.

She was born Dec. 12, 1934, in Ness City to Edward (Eddie) Rein and Mildred M. McKittrick. She was a 1952 graduate of McCracken High School.

While she was a resident of McCracken, she a member of the historic St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Though growing up and eventually returning to McCracken, she lived several years in Liberal, raising her family. Upon returning to McCracken in 1978, she and her husband, Lester Higgins, owned and operated the local hardware store. Later she moved to Emporia and eventually Olathe to be closer to family.

Survivors include a son, Kelly Walker and wife, Alannah and three grandchildren, Davin, Kael and Cullen, Magnolia, Texas; four daughters, Cindy Cannatella and husband, Paul and grandson, Paolo, Houston, Katie Wills and husband, Marvin, Gatesville, Texas, Sabrina Hurt, husband, Ron and grandson, Samuel, Leawood and Sarena Higgins, New Strawn; a granddaughter, Sarah Knight and husband, Kynn and two great-grandchildren, Charles and Charlotte, Cypress, Texas; a granddaughter, Rachael Creel and husband, Sam and two great-grandchildren, Leon and Stella, Newcastle, Texas; a brother, James ‘Jim’ Rein, Hutchinson; two sisters, Sheryl McCaskey and husband, Benny, Great Bend and their family and Madeline ‘Maddy’ Petz, Hutchison and family; many cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and two brothers, Danny and Donnie Rein.

Once restrictions are lifted from the current global pandemic, arrangements will be planned for a celebration of her life including a Mass at St. Mary’s Church and a graveside service in McCracken Cemetery.

Memorials can be given to the McCracken City Library or St. Mary’s McCracken Heritage Association.
