Melvin J. Dinkel, 84, Garden City, died Monday, Aug. 10, 2020, at his home.
He was born Sept. 18, 1935, in Morland to Henry and Josephine (Gerstner) Dinkel. He grew up in the Morland area. He attended schools in Graham County and was a 1953 graduate of Morland High School.
He married Eunice A. Martell on June 3, 1961, in St. Peter. They moved to Goodland in 1964. They later lived in Laurel, Neb. in 1978 and moved to Garden City in 1979. He managed the Co-op while living in Morland and Laurel. After moving to Garden City, he was a sales representative at Farmland Industries. From 1990 to 1997, he was manager of Country Corner in Garden City and retired in 1997. He was a U.S. Army veteran from 1957 to 1962.
He was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church, Garden City and Knights of Columbus.
He enjoyed going to the casinos, fixing things, gardening, and spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; four sons, Daryl Dinkel and wife, Marty, John Dinkel and wife, Karen, and Brian Dinkel and wife, Shiela, all of Garden City and Tim Dinkel and wife, Latisha, Montgomery, Texas; a daughter, Ann Britton and husband, Luther, Jackson, Mich.; two brothers LeRoy Dinkel, Morland and Dan Dinkel, Bismarck, N.D.; three sisters, Rosie Zerr, Quinter, Joan Miller, Hays, and Arlene Fickel, Gunnison, Colo.; 16 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Mark Dinkel.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Dominic Catholic Church, Garden City; burial in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City with military graveside rites conducted by Kansas Army National Guard and the American Legion District No. 8 Honor Guards.
Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, both at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City.
A vigil /rosary will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at the church.
