Officer Mitchell A. "Mitch" Berens, 52, died Friday, Aug. 28, 2020, at Hays Medical Center.


He was born Aug. 21,1968, in Hays to Vernon L. and Norma Jean (Kuhn) Berens. He grew up in Victoria and was a 1987 graduate of Victoria High School. He attended the KLETC Police Academy in Hutchinson and received his bachelor degree at Fort Hays State University and was on the football team.


He married Tisha Dawn (Sader) on Aug. 30, 2019, in Abilene. He was a Sergeant with the Hays Police Department for 25 years and retired in June of 2020.


He enjoyed fishing, golfing, and spending time with his family.


Survivors include his wife, of the home; a son, Shane Berens and Angel Bryant, Gorham; a daughter, Shelbie Berens and Kevin Keith, Wichita; his mother, Hays; two brothers, Michael Berens, Victoria, and Matthew Berens and wife, A.J., Hays; a sister, Michelle Tuma and husband, Larry, Overland Park; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Lyal and Julie Sader, Hays; a stepson, Seth Bielefeld, Manhattan; a stepdaughter, Megan Bielefeld, Junction City; and a number of uncles, aunts, nephews and nieces.


He was preceded in death by his father; a sister, Milissa Rae Berens; and his grandparents.


Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at The Basilica of St. Fidelis, Victoria; burial in St. Ann Cemetery, Walker.


Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays, 1919 E. 22nd, Hays, KS 67601 and from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday, at The Basilica.


A vigil with a Daughters of Isabella rosary will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, at the mortuary.


Memorials are suggested to the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 48 in care of the mortuary.
