Gerald P. "Jerry" Laprade, 83, Hays, died Monday, Oct. 12, 2020, at Hays Medical Center.


He was born Sept. 9, 1937, in Easthampton, Mass., to George and Amanda (LaPointe) Laprade. He grew up in Easthampton and was a graduate of Holy Oke High School. He attended Cloud County Community College in Concordia. He received his bachelor’s degree in science, and his master’s degree in French, at Fort Hays State College.


He married Doraleen (Kuhn) on Aug. 8, 1962, in Victoria. He was a French and American History teacher at St. Francis Seminary in Victoria, and Thomas More Prep-Marian High School in Hays. He also taught French at St. Joseph Catholic Grade School and part time at Fort Hays State University.


He went to broadcasting school in Massachusetts and worked in Iola, Concordia, and here in Hays at KAYS. He was a U.S. Army veteran from 1956 to 1958, and was stationed in Massachusetts, Oklahoma and Hawaii.


He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Adoration Chapel.


After teaching, he enjoyed huck weaving, was an avid gardener, and a marathon runner. He participated in 42 marathons, and many 10k’s runs, 5k’s runs, and half marathons.

Survivors include his wife, of the home; a brother, Donald Laprade, Tuners Falls, Mass.; two sisters, Edna Laliberte, Easthampton and Irene Labrie and husband, Armand, Southampton, Mass.


He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Ernest Laprade, Father George L Laprade, Roland Laprade, Wilfred Laprade and Edmond Laprade; and a sister, Eleanor Perras.


A private Mass will be at The Basilica of St. Fidelis, Victoria; a private burial will be in St. Fidelis Cemetery, Victoria with military honors by Victoria Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1751.
