Roger Dale Batson, 81, Hays, died Thursday, August 13, 2020.
He was born Feb. 5, 1939, in Coffeyville to Virgil and Sylvia (Hargis) Batson. He was a 1957 graduate of Coffeyville High School.
He married Margie Newton on Oct. 14, 1961, in Parsons. After his military service, he began his career in the banking industry which lasted for over 40 years. He started his banking career at Union National Bank and Kansas State Bank in Manhattan. He was President at First National Bank in Hays and Chillicothe State Bank in Chillicothe, Mo. He was a U.S. Army veteran for three years and achieved the rank of Sergeant prior to his honorable discharge.
He was a member of many civic organizations, including serving as president for the Kansas Jaycees.
After retiring in 2004, they moved to Bella Vista, Ark, and in 2013 they finally returned home to Hays. In addition to being a dedicated to his family, he spent his time volunteering at church and Hays Medical Center, playing golf, and cheering on the Kansas State Wildcats and enjoyed his five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He held an unwavering faith in God which he shared with those who surrounded him.
Survivors include his wife, Margie; a son, Lance Batson and wife, Cindy, Fort Worth, Texas; a daughter, Lori Vitztum and husband, Mike, Hays; five grandchildren, Haylee Glassman and husband, Matt, Fairfield, Conn., Katee Vitztum, Hays, Blake Batson, Dallas, Alex Batson, Manhattan and Elizabeth Batson, Fort Worth; two great-grandchildren, Isabelle and Jude Glassman and sister and brother in-laws, Mike and Carolyn Newmaster, Ottawa, Bob Hizey, Augusta, Bill and Carolyn Newton, Las Cruces, N.M., and Frank and Evelyn Washburn, Guide Rock, Neb.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister-in laws, Virginia Hizey and Jane Washburn.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, at Cornerstone Southern Baptist Church, 1605 E. 29th Hays, KS 67601; private family inurnment in Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery, WaKeeney with military honors.
