Lawrence Schmeidler

Lawrence Schmeidler, 87, Catharine, died Sunday, Oct. 4, 2020, at Good Samaritan Society of Hays.

He was born Jan. 15, 1933, north of Catharine, to Anton and Anna (Sander) Schmeidler. He was a 1951 graduate of Hays High School.

He married Dolores (Romme) on Oct. 12, 1954, in Victoria. He was a farmer and grew up north of Catharine, near Severin.

He was a member of St. Catherine Catholic Church, Catherine Knights of Columbus, he was instrumental in starting the Catherine Council in 1996, and served as the first Grand Knight, and was a past parish council member. In 1975, he received a Kansas Bankers Soil Conservation Award, and in the 1980’s he received an Ellis County Friend of 4-H Award.

Survivors include his wife, of the home; a son, Jonathan Schmeidler and wife, Kim, Hays; two daughters, Diane Schmeidler, Hays and Joyce Schumacher and husband, Jerry, Salina; four sisters, Sophia Walter, Victoria, Lillian Fisher and husband, Victor, Hays, Ann Marie Lessor and husband, Laverne, Great Bend and Gloria VonLintel and husband, Robert. Vincent; two sisters-in-law, Elsie Schmeidler, Hays and Vera Schmidtberger, Great Bend; a brother-in-law, Leon Romme and wife, Jolene, Lawrence; five grandchildren, Maggie Carey (Chris); Sarah Anglemyer (Corey); Jacob Schmeidler; Grace Schmeidler; Faith Schmeidler; three great-grandchildren, Natalia Carey, Madeleine Carey, Levi Anglemyer; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Edwin Schmeidler and wife, Alfreda, Ralph Schmeidler and Anton Schmeidler Jr.; a sister, Irene Dreiling and husband, Fred; two brothers-in-law, Ralph Walter and Virgil Hertel.

A private family Mass of Christian Burial will be held and burial in St. Fidelis Cemetery, Victoria. Due to the COVID-19 restrictions a public mass will be held at a later date.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays, 1919 E. 22nd Hays, KS 67601.

A vigil and St. Catherine Knights of Columbus rosary will be at at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary.

Memorials are suggested to St. Catherine Catholic Church, Catharine in care of the mortuary.
