Terence "Terry" John Hammerschmidt, 67, Hays, died Monday, Oct. 5, 2020 at Hays Medical Center.
He was born July 21, 1953, in Hays to Clarence and Bernita (Glassman) Hammerschmidt.
He worked alongside his dad in the family business Clem’s Inc. for many years. He was also a long time volunteer at the ARC thrift shop for over 30 years.
He was heavily involved in the Special Olympics participating in basketball and speed walking and was inducted into the State of Kansas Special Olympics Hall of Fame in 1984 for his accomplishments in speed walking.
He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Hays.
Survivors include a brother, Mark Hammerschmidt, Hays; two sisters, Sue O’Connor and husband, Deron, and Lori Schmidt and husband, Scott, all of Hays; five nephews, Cameron O’Connor, Chandler Schmidt, Braden Schmidt, Jason Pfannenstiel and Michael O’Connor; two nieces, Keisha Schmidt and Lanie Pfeifer; four great -nephews; two great-nieces; and his dog, Ally.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and grandparents.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Hays; burial in St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Brock's-Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory, 2509 Vine, Hays, KS 67601and from 9 a.m. until time of service Saturday at the church.
A combined vigil/rosary at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral chapel.
Memorials are suggested to DSNWK or Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, in care of the funeral chapel.
