Richard Gayle Horchem, 88, died Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2020, at the University of Kansas Health System St. Francis Campus, Topeka.
He was born April 17, 1932, southeast of Ransom to Peter Jr. and Eva (Jaehde) Horchem. He graduated from Ransom High School and Kansas State University.
He married Lavonne Kay Horchem in 1953. He was a teacher and coach in the Ness City school system where he enjoyed working with the young student athletes before shifting all of his attention to the family farm in the 1970’s. He continued to go to the farm almost daily until his death. He was a U.S. Army veteran for two years.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Brad Horchem and wife, Cindy, Manhattan and Todd Horchem and wife, Brenda, Ness City; a sister, Linda Claycamp and husband, Terry, Hays; four grandchildren, Travis Horchem, Newton; Megan (George) Heyns, Kansas City, Mo., Kali (Mark) Solomon, Wichita; and Jana Horchem, Englewood, Colo.; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Betty Schneider; a brother, Rex Horchem; and a son, Craig Horchem.
Graveside services were held Oct. 24, 2020, in Ness City Cemetery.
