Irene Sander

Irene Sander, 92, formerly of Gorham, died Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2020, at Russell Regional Hospital.

She was born Nov. 17, 1928, on the farm north of Gorham to Frank P. and Margaret (Rohr) Dechant. She grew up and attended school in Antonino.

She married Louis R. Sander on Aug. 3, 1950, in Walker. He preceded her in death July 8, 2012.

She was a homemaker and cooked at the Gorham Elementary School form 1981 until she retired in 1996. She was a caregiver for Frank and Cecillia Polcyn of Russell for over 15 years. After her marriage to Louis, they lived in Russell until they moved to their farm in 1959, south east of Gorham. She moved to care center in Russell in 2011.

She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and Daughters of Isabella, both of Gorham, Russell Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, and was a charter member of the Sunflower Polka Club.

She enjoyed cooking, quilting, crocheting and playing cards.

Survivors include two sons, Bruce Sander and wife, Mary, Gorham, Mark Sander and wife, Susie, Lenexa; five brothers, Herb Dechant and wife, Viola, Hays, Eugene Dechant and wife Kaye, Woodinville, Wash., Duane Dechant and wife, Marge, Olathe, Virgil Dechant, McPherson and Harold Dechant and wife, Madeline, Gladstone, Va.; five sisters, Rosiline Ziegler, Thornton, Colo., Betty Knoll, Liberal, Ann Brungardt-Ziegler, Grainfield, Mariette Dechant, McPherson, Barbara Zerr and husband, Henry, Garden City; six grandchildren, Matt Sander (Teal); Sarah Henry (Brett); Tyler Sander; Luke Sander (Katie); Lynn Sander and Derek Fricke; Elizabeth Roddy (Ryan); and 10 great- grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Alvin Dechant; a sister, Evelyn Erickson; and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Gorham; burial in St. Mary Cemetery, Gorham.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, and from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday, both at the church.
