Raymond William “Shorty” Nieman, 72, Hays, died Friday, Feb. 26, 2021.
He was born Jan. 11, 194,9 in Colby to Nick and Lucy (Broeckelman) Nieman. He was a 1967 graduate of Grinnell High School.
He married Kathy Percival on Sept. 6, 1971, in Oakley. As a contractor, he contributed to the Hays community in many ways including the construction of additions to Hays Medical Center, St Nicholas of Myra Church, Hays Regional Airport, Hays Recreation Center, and many other projects. He was a U.S. Army veteran from 1968 to 1970.
He enjoyed his family, fishing and hunting, especially elk, deer, pheasant, and turkey with his friends. He was a dirt track racing fan and enjoyed taking walks with his dogs. He was also an avid fan of the Chiefs, Jayhawks, and Royals.
Survivors include his wife, Hays; a son, Raymond “Todd” Nieman and wife, Colleen, Munjor; a daughter, Brandy Huser and husband, Glenn, Victoria; three brothers, Jerry Nieman and wife, Helen, Golden, Colo., Lawrence Nieman and wife, Judy, Sioux Falls, S.D., and Kenny Nieman, Garden City; a sister, Jean Loader and husband, Don, Salina; a sister-in-law, Pat Nieman, Garden City; four grandchildren, Levi and Chelsie Huser, Victoria and Raymond “Brett” and Raylyn Nieman, Munjor; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Al, Jim, and Paul Nieman; and two sisters, Erma Nieman and Alma Gillispie.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. March 26, 2021, in Kansas State Veterans’ Cemetery, WaKeeney. Military Honors courtesy of the Hays Veterans of Foreign Wars Honor Guard. In memory of him please dress casually and wear your favorite team shirt.
