Jackie “Jack” Joe Watts

Jackie “Jack” Joe Watts, 77, Hays, died Thursday, March 18, 2021, at his home.  

He was born Nov. 15, 1943, in  Portis to Orville Richard and Edna Mae (Maier) Watts. He grew up in Portis and was a 1961 graduate of Portis High School and received a bachelor’s degree in teaching from Fort Hays State University in 1965

 He married Barbara (Dillon) Grabbe. He later married Karen T. (Dinges) on Jan.  23, 1996, int Las Vegas. He worked at Shade Construction Company in Hays for 40 years, and became owner and operator of the Company.  He was an auctioneer with Bob Munch Auctions for over 20 years and had a used furniture store in Hays for a few years.  

He was a member of the New Life Center Assembly of God Church in Hays.

He was an avid hunter, fisherman and football fan.  He enjoyed golfing, playing cards and going gambling.

Survivors include his wife, of the home; a son, Brian Watts and RoJene Brockelman, Hays; a daughter, Julie and Shawn Sulzman, Hays; a stepson, Michael Schmidtberger and wife, Marcey, Walker; two brothers, Gerald Watts and wife, Marlene, Downs and Mike Watts, Topeka; a mother-in-law, Mildred Dinges, Hays; two step-sisters, Marjorie Albrecht, Downs and Marilyn King, Hays; five grandchildren, Cody (Tracy) Watts, Cade Watts, Shelby (Andrew) Bach, Kirsten Sulzman and fiancé, Zack Schilowsky, Sydney Sulzman and fiancé, Brady Jacques; three step-grandchildren, Taylor Schmidtberger, Kiley Schmidtberger and fiancé, Brady Beagley and Cole Schmidtberger;  and four great-grandchildren, Elaina and Leo Bach; Sadie and Owen Watts.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his step-father, Clifton Watts; and a nephew, Don Watts.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the New Life Center Assembly of God Church,  Hays; a private family inurnment will be held at a later date.  

Familywill receive friends from 9:30 to 11:00  a.m. Tuesday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to New Life Center Assembly of God Church or Humane Society of the High Plains in care of  Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays, 1919 E. 22nd, Hays, KS 67601.
