Pheobie Lea (Montgomery) Stutheit of Norton was born June 29, 1932 in Jennings, KS to Frank and Doris Montgomery. She passed peacefully on the family farm on January 1, 2022, following a brief illness at the age of 89.
Pheobie graduated from Norton Community High School with the class of 1950. She studied nursing at General Hospital in Kansas City, MO, receiving her RN degree. Her nursing assignments took her to Hays, KS, Boulder, CO, and Quinter, KS, where she met her beloved husband, Marvin. They were married June 2, 1957. Their union was blessed with one daughter, Sue Ann, and 63 years of marriage, until Marvin’s death on April 4, 2021.
Pheobie especially enjoyed antiques, not only collecting, and decorating her home with them, but studying their history. She was an avid reader and served on the Library Board when (the current) Norton Public Library was built. She also served as President on the Andbe Home Board. She enjoyed entertaining, classical music, playing bridge, and teaching Sunday School at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Norton. On the farm, she was a devoted partner to her husband Marvin, cooking meals for the help and even working cattle when called upon. Above all, she was a woman of strong faith.
Pheobie is survived by her daughter, Sue Ann Stutheit of Norton; three sisters-in-law, Lela (Gary) Eller of Hays, KS, Sandra Stutheit of Waverly, NE, and Helen DaVatz of Olathe, KS, and one cousin, Veda (Marvin) Orth of St. Francis, KS. Also included in surviving family is the Stutheit Farm’s manager, Brian Smith, his son, Andrew and daughter, Jesika, all of Norton.
